Charities paid $762M to private fundraisers

There are more than 85,000 charities registered with Canada Revenue Agency. All of them can issue tax receipts for the donations they solicit.. Many of those charities are small, with limited staffs and rely on fundraising companies to do their fundraising. Over the past five years, external fundraisers in Canada have taken in more than $750 million. In many cases they've billed 90% of the money they help collect.

The Alzheimer Society of Saskatchewan, paid $96,849 for a campaign that raised just $95,812. The Children's Leukemia Research Association Canada, which raised $4.2 million over the last four years, but paid $3.2 million of that to its external fundraiser. Nova Scotia Crime Stoppers, which raised $2.8 million between 2003 and 2009 — of which $2.2 million, or 79 per cent, went to pay its fundraiser. AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL CANADIAN SECTION (ENGLISH ) spent $758,924 to raise $517,568. CANADIAN CANCER SOCIETY, ONTARIO spent $100,024 to raise $29,513 in $2009.
